This weekend our Panthers traveled to Greensboro for the 3A State Individual Wrestling Tournament. There was a lot of good & competitive matches. Orange managed to advance 4 wrestlers into the place rounds. Despite the great effort by the team when the dust settled our Panthers came up a little short placing 4th. Only 6 points separated the top four places. See articles section for brackets & team scores. Thanks to the Coaching Staff for their teachings, guidance, and conditioning the team to be prepared for each competition. This weekend our Orange Panthers competed in the 3A Mid-East Regional Tournament. Orange faced the challenge of Union Pines the whole tournament. In the end the Orange Panthers rose to the challenge scoring 213.5 pts to win and advance 11 wrestlers to the State Tournament next weekend in Greensboro. Tonight our Panthers traveled to Concord, NC to face last years State Champs JM Robinson. What a turn out on both side to root their teams on. The starting weight was 103. At 103, Will Riley worked Jonah Swinson to a 7-0 decision, Panthers lead 3-0. Jordan Baker at 112 follows with a pin of CJ Buck in 0:48 and the Panther crowd goes wild. Kaleb Cates wrestled a tough Hamilton Jones and lost by a tech fall 17-2. Robinson is on the board and trail 9-5. Luke Mincey at 125 faced Garrison White who scored a 8-0 major decision. Robinson has now tied the score 9-9. At 130 Jack Twomey-Kozak lost a heartbreaker 8-7 to Tomas Adame and Robinson takes the lead 12-9. Anderson Pope at 135 work Anthony Pfieffer to a 8-3 decision to tie the score at 12-12. At 140 Zach Rimmer battled tough against Devante Andujar but came up short in a 5-2 decision. Robinson re-takes the lead 15-12. JD Wynn at 145 worked Kenan Robertson to a 13-5 major decision and the Panthers regain the lead 16-15. The crowd emotions have been going back and forth match by match. Cole McLelland wrestling at 152 turned Cody Murgas for the pin at the 1:32 mark. The Panther crowd goes wild and the Panthers lead has increased to 22-15. At 160 Tyrone Mason wrestled Patrick Oakley to a 9-4 decision to continue to add too the Panther lead score now Orange 25, Robinson 15. At 171 Alex Shawver starts off with a takedown to stun Nathan Tesh. Alex wrestled a smart yet aggressive match scoring a decision of 4-2. The Panther crowd continues to cheer on the Panthers as they feel the end is near as the score is Orange 28, Robinson 15. Justin Barbee faced Xavier Figueroa at 189. Justin wrestled an aggressive tough match turning Xavier several times. Xavier hurt his shoulder and was unable to continue. Justin wins by injury default. This sealed the Championship. The Orange crowd stands & cheers the 2011 3A State Team Champions. The Panthers forfeit the last 2 matches making the final score 34-27. Alex Shawver is Most Valuable Wrestler. What a night for Panther fans who traveled the 150 miles to Concord, NC. Congratulations to JM Robinson on their great season and especially to JM Robinson for their wonderful hospitality. The Panthers will not have too much time to savor the win as the Regional Tournament begins Friday on the road but this time on to Chapel Hill. Congratulations PANTHERS on a job well done. Last night our Panthers traveled to Nashville, NC to wrestle Havelock. What a battle. It went down to the last match with the score 24-22. Our Panthers scored a pin in the last match to move to the East Regional finals winning 30-22. In the Championship match the Panthers faced Nash Central & won 37-33. The results of the matches are in the article section. Pack up the bus as the Panthers take the road again in their quest of the 3A State Dual Team Championship against JM Robinson. Tonight our Panthers traveled to Union Pines High School to compete in the 1st & 2nd round of the State Dual Team Championship. Up first was South Brunswick. It was a tough match but a great team effort resulted in our Panthers being victorious by a score of 35-27. Union Pines won their 1st match against Northern Nash which set up the 2nd round Orange vs Union Pines. Both teams were well represented & a great fan base was on hand for the battle. The match started @ 152 lbs. At 152, Cole McLelland lost a close decision 6-4 to put Union Pines ahead 0-3. Tyrone Mason wrestling 160 won a close decision 4-2 to tie the score 3-3. At 171, Alex Shawver wrestled a tough match but got caught & pinned @ the 5:59 mark to give Uion Pines a 9-3 lead. Justin Barbee, wrestling at 189, fought a tough battle & won 3-1 to cut Union Pines lead to 9-6. At 215, Thomas Harrington used his size & reach to win by a 6-2 decision to tie the team score @ 9-9. Wes Dawson wrestling 285, manhandled is opponent to a major decision of 11-2 to give the Panthers the lead 13-9. Will Riley at 103 followed with a great major decision of 15-3 to increase the Panthers lead to 17-9. At 112, Jordan Baker worked his opponent for a major decision of 14-3 to further increase the Panther lead to 21-9. Kaleb Cates faced a tough opponent coming up short 7-3 & Union Pines started to whittle down the lead to 21-12. At 125 Luke Mincey wrestled a tough opponent & tough match leaving it all on the mat up but came up short decisioned 4-1. Union Pine now trailed by 6 narrowing the score to 21-15. Jack Twomey-Kozak at 130 wrestled well & kept his opponent at bay to win a 8-3 decision increasing the Panther lead to 24-15. At 135 Anderson Pope wrestled his heart out falling short in a 3-2 decision. Union Pines now 6 points back, 24-18 with 2 matches to go. Zach Rimmer at 140 arose to the occassion wrestling to a 7-3 decision sealing a Panthers victory of 27-24. There as a lot of great wrestling on both sides as well as crowd noise during the whole match. Union Pine came to wrestle & our Panthers battled their way into 3rd round site TBD. Tonight our Panthers traveled to Chapel Hill to face the Tigers. The stands were well populated with Panther fans. The Panthers brought all the wrestlers in support of the match. The Panthers started strong with a pin by Luke Mincey, & a decision by Jack Twomey-Kozak. Anderson wrestled a very tough match but came up short in defeat 4-6. Zach Rimmer, won by major decision, JD Wynn pinned & Cole McLelland won by decision. Alex Shawver had a very tough match & worked it to a 3-3 tie before his opponent was hurt & defaulted. Logan Joseph faced Max Redfoot in a battle. Logan fought off his back & was defeated by points. Justin Barbee won by major decision, Thomas Harrington followed with a pin & Wesley Dawson won by decision. Will Riley wrestled to a major deccision, Jordan Baker pinned & Kaleb Cates finished with a decision. When all the fur settled, our Panthers came away with a 56-8 victory & their 9th straight Conference Title. Congratulations to our Panthers for a job well done. Team scores were kept with only 1 person per team per weight class scoring points. Out of 11 teams, Team Orange placed 2nd overall, trailing only the home team, Ledford High School. We were cheered on by a great representation of Orange Panther parents and supporters.

Tonight our Panthers traveled to Chapel Hill to wrestle 3 conference matches. 1st up was Northern Vance & our Panthers controlled the match from the beginning to win 73-5. 2nd up was Southern Vance & again the Panthers took control fronm the start & finished with 75-6 win. The 3rd match had our Panthers facing Oxford-Webb. The Panthers wrestled tough & won 83-0. This sets up the showdown for the conference next week @ Chapel Hill. Winner will be Conference Champ. Our Orange Panthers traveled to Havelock this weekend to compete in the Havelock Duals. We opened up with Manteo, who had only 4 wrestlers & won 78-6. Next up was New Bern. The Panthers came out strong & kept focused on the match to win 42-13. The snow started out slow & the Panthers continued wrestling with White Oak the next opponent, who came with 8 wrestlers. Coach Shriner mixed the line-up with wrestlers who had made the trip out to Havelock to win 68-4. The snow continued to fall & the Havelock Duals were stopped due to weather. Unfortunately we did not wrestle Havelock but will probably see them in the Team Duals later next month. The Panthers are now 11-0 heading into conference matches. Great wrestling in Havelock & now to get ready to wrestle conference followed by the conference tournament. GO PANTHERS!!!!!!!! |

This weekend our Panthers traveled to Middle Creek HS very early in the morning. The Panthers started off strong & battled ALL day & into the evening. It was a long, tough trail but our Panthers were up for the challenge. West Johnson & New Bern were on our tail but when the dust finally subsided @ 11:00 our Panthers were victorious scoring 219.5 pt to New Bern's 189.0. It was a GREAT day to be alive & a Panther. Today our Panthers battled against Davie County, Wake Forest-Rollsville, JH Rose & DSA. The Panthers started off with a trememdous win over Davie County taking it to the last match to decide with a 31-27 victory. Orange was victorious over Wake Forest-Rollsville 43-25, JH Rose 63-12 & DSA 66-7. Our Panthers traveled to Cary to partisipate in the Sgt Mark Adams Tournament this week. What a way to honor Sgt Mark Adams by wrestling their best. The Panthers started scoring early on their way to building up 241.50 points to win the tournament. 11 wrestlers placed, 5 first, 2 second, 3 fifth, & 1 sixth. The Orange Panthers have been denied by the district to attend the scaled down Eastern Alamance Toury citing potential weather issue tomorrow. This weekend our Panthers to the annual trip to Eden, NC for the Morehead Holiday Classic wrestling tournament. The Panthers started strong winning 12 of 12 matches & 2 byes. The Panthers quickly jumped out to the lead scoring 34.5 points with 12.5 of those bonus points. The Panthers managed to hold the lead all day but JM Robinson was closing in fast. In the end the Panthers placed 14 wrestlers to JM Robinson's 10 to win the tournament 189.5 to 181. Orange also amassed the 189.5 points without a champion. What a GREAT team effort. The tournament used a “Madison” bracketing system, wrestlers were put into groups of anywhere between 8 to 11 wrestlers per group and then each group had their own bracket, double elimination. We took a total of 40 guys and at the end of the day we had 22 in the finals (either for 1/2 or 3/4). Congratulations JV. Orange WINS, Orange WINS!!!!! What an exciting & eventful Jim King/Orange Invitational Tournament this year. This was the 30th Annual Jim King/Orange Invitational tournament. A field of 18 teams attended & the competition started Friday, ending Saturday night with the snow. Prior to the Final round Jim King was honored for his 37 years of service to Orange High School. It is unknown how many individuals Jim King has taught, coached & applied medical assistance to over those years, but he has touched so many lives no only at Orange but also visiting schools. Congratulations to Jim King. How better to celebrate Jim King the for Orange to win the Jim King Orange Invitational Tournament. Orange started with 14 wrestlers on Friday night & fought hard placing 12 wrestlers in the points to win the JKO. The Orange results 1st Place with 231 pts. The format for the scrimmage was individual matches. The 5th Annual Sgt Mark Adams 'Make a Difference Wrestling Clinic' will be held on Saturday October 2, 2010 @ Orange High School. Sgt Mark Adams made the supreme sacrifice protecting this great country & we honor him through this wrestling clinic. This years Honored Coach in North Carolina's own Mike Kendall. Mike Kendall wrestled at the University of North Carolina from 1991-94 but had his best season during the 1993-94 campaign when he was the Atlantic Coast Conference Champion. Mike is a native to the state, he amassed a very impressive high school wrestling career by finishing his senior season as a 4X North Carolina High School State Champion. Kendall also showed that he was equally as dominate in Greco as he went on to capture a USA Junior National Greco Roman Championship during his impressive high school campaign. Still in love with the sport, Mike Kendall has spent his last 14 years coaching high school wrestling in North Carolina at Chapel Hill HS and East Wake HS. We are very pleased to have him working our Carolina Summer Camps and once again involved with Tar Heel Wrestling. |

Last Sunday night Coach Shriner was inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in Stillwater, Ok. Orange Wrestling was well represented at the Friday Center in Chapel Hill to see Coach Shriner receives the green jacket. Congratulations & Thanks go to Coach Shrine for all he does for the Orange High School Wrestling program & the Orange Wrestling Family. |

This weekend our Orange Panthers traveled to Morehead HS in Eden, NC for the 3A Mideast Regional. The Panthers had an up hill battle competing in a new region since moving up to 3A. When the dust settled, our Panthers scored 243.5 pts to outscored Union Pines to win the Regions. Fighting tough battles & adding points to the team score were 103lbs Will Riley, 112lbs Jordan Baker, 160lbs Justin Barbee, & 285lbs Wesley Dawson. Our Panthers fought hard and came so close to winning their 3rd consecutive State Dual Team Championship, losing only in the final match by 1 point. They did great and we are very proud of their efforts all season long. The Durham Herald Sun did a good article on the match. With all the action that has taken place this week a milestone for Chris Johnson was not mentioned. This week he surpassed the 172 win mark and moved into 2nd on the All Time Career Orange Win list, now with 175 wins. Congratulations Chris. Dustin Champion continues to raise the Orange All Time Win mark with ach win now at 179 wins. Great feat & accomplishment by these two Seniors. This years Senior Class has amassed an amazing record of 701 career wins for a total winning % of 73.17%. Congratulations Seniors. Go PANTHERS!!!!!!!!! |

Last night, our Panthers wrestled Chapel Hill for the conference championship. First up was the honoring of the Panthers Seniors who have worked so hard over he years. Some played backup support roles but were integral to the success of the Panther Wrestling program. Congratulations SENIORS. Next up was the match. The Panthers managed to tame the Tigers from Chapel Hill in a 56-8 victory. Box score in the article section. Next up the Carolina 3A Conference Tournament on Saturday @ 10:00 am. At 55Kg., SPC Jermaine Hodge won the bronze medal by defeating Song Buer, China, 0-2, 4-2, 3-0. Hodge lost his opening bout to Gyu-Jin Choi, Korea, 1-3, 0-3. Choi, the gold medalist in the competition, pulled Hodge into the Repechage bout for the bronze against Buer, who lost to Choi in the semi-final bout.

Jim King, was born in Melbourne, Florida. He attend Applachian State University 1968-1972, wrestled and earned All-American status at the National NAIA Tournament in 1971. Served as Head Wrestling Coach at Prattville High, Ala. 1973. Head Wrestling coach at Orange High from 1974-1990 with a record of 125-28. He coached two individual state champions when state had only one classification. His team won State Sectional tournaments in 1978 and 1982. He served as Athletic Director at Orange High 1979-2003. Named the North Carolina 1999 Westling USA State Man of the Year: directed the Orange High/Jim King Invitational Tournament 1975-2006. Coach King spent months planning and putting all the pieces in place when he began serving as Director for the North Carolina High Tournament when all three classifications came together under one roof in 1994. He directed the State meets through 2003. Named Regional NC Athletic Director of the Year 1999. Coach King was named NC Alliance of Athletics, Health, Phy. Ed, Recreation, and Dance Athletic Director of the Year 2001. He has been a wrestler, a coach, and an Athletic Director who has continued to be involved in the sport of wrstling. He was retired but now works as the Orange Trainer, working and teaching the student trainiers. He resides in Hillsborough with his wife Andrea. They have two children Jamie and Robin.
